    Recommender systems are considered to be one of the classic Machine Learning and Big Data applications. They are tremendously useful in introducing products or information to users in a personalized manner as well as in enhancing user satisfaction and loyalty. At LinkedIn, we have incorporated recommender systems in building high-value and highly engaged data products since the early days, for example, the People You Might Know (PYMK) data product. Since then, almost every single LinkedIn product line has a recommender system in its product folio. Examples of well known data products at LinkedIn that employ recommendation techniques include job recommendation, people to follow, company to follow, courses to take, and many more. This talk will share high level glimpses into these recommender systems, the techniques that were used, and the challenges in building, deploying and operating them at scale.

    This talk describes concept of Digital Twin with respect to the Railway Network. Railroad customers across the world manage thousands of miles of Track infrastructure that consists of the Rails, Ballast, Ties, Bridges, Tunnels, Wayside equipment, etc. Different types of sensing Technologies like Optical, Ultrasound, Radar, Thermal imagery is used to monitor health of these individual Railroad Assets. Typically, each of these solutions measures the health of individual Assets separately and provides a narrow view of Track infrastructure.

    This talk demonstrates a new approach to Track infrastructure monitoring that GE is piloting for customers using the concept of Digital Twin for network. Using an offline GPU infrastructure – Deep Learning models are created and trained on large volumes of video data to learn the state of healthy Track and predict anomalies. These models currently work on optical imagery captured from Locomotive-mounted cameras – in future, plans are in place to extend this to newer sensing solutions. The talk will introduce the concept of Track Health Index (THI) that is calculated by these advanced Deep Learning models. THI values for different Railway Assets are calculated on the fly and a risk roll-up is conducted to give a THI value for the whole network route. Railroad customers can focus their Track inspection efforts on routes with lower THI and drill down to get the exact location where certain Track defects occur. Using Deep Learning models running on servers or eventually in Predix Cloud – large volumes of Locomotive video data is analyzed to dynamically provide THI values on a Geographic map. This GIS report is used by railroads for Track Maintenance planning.

    During the talk, real customer use-case videos will be shown that demonstrate Analytics on videos from Locomotive-mounted cameras with Deep Learning models to calculate THI and display on a map for driving Maintenance decisions.

This has been done under the over arching framework of keeping customer data privacy issues at the centre. At the same time evolving to a nimble agile framework that has allowed us to adopt the same across the Enterprise. It entailed lot of moving pieces, like training of employees, having the right infrastructure to ensure that we can apply the BD and AI techniques at scale and pass on the benefits to our customers.
